A look at President Obama’s day in Holland

This is President Obama’s first visit to Amsterdam and to The Hague and to the Netherlands. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte welcomed US President Barack Obama in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Obama was proud to be with some of the Dutch masters who he had studied in school, and to see the extraordinary traditions of the Netherlands.

Obama had an excellent opportunity to experience the Rijksmuseum and to see the documents, including the Treaty of Friendship that John Adams negotiated more than 200 years ago, as a reminder of the historic ties between the Netherlands and the United States. Of all the press conferences Obama had done, this was easily the most impressive backdrop that he had to a press conference.

Obama said that he is also very proud of both of the Dutch teams at the Winter Olympics and in addition to painting, the Dutch really know how to speed skate, he said.

Obama thanked His Majesty, King Willem-Alexander, as well as Prime Minister Mark Rutte, and the people of the Netherlands, for all the preparations that went into bringing together so many heads of state for the Nuclear Security Summit. This is just one more example of Dutch leadership — not just on nuclear security, but on many global challenges, he said.

President Obama arrives in The Netherlands, tours the Rijksmuseum and holds a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Rutte of The Netherlands, before participating in a bilateral meeting with President Xi Jinping of China at the United States Ambassador’s residence before arriving at the World Forum to participate in the Nuclear Security Summit.
