Apple launches iOS 4.2

Apple announced that the latest version of its mobile operating system IOS 4.2 can be downloaded for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch today. Especially owners of an iPad have looked forward to this update, with more than 100 features from earlier versions are also available for the tablet, including multitasking, unified inbox and AirPrint, a Wi-Fi printing architecture.

iOS 4.2 brings multitasking from iPhone and iPod touch to iPad. So you can be more productive as you work, have more fun as you play, or do a little of both. Everything happens smoothly and efficiently — without slowing down the performance of the foreground app or draining the battery unnecessarily.

AirPlay lets you stream digital media wirelessly from your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch to your Apple TV and AirPlay-enabled speakers. So you can watch movies and photos on your widescreen TV and play music through the best speakers in the house.

For Apple, the move is a nice way to update the iPad ahead of the Christmas shopping season. The new iOS also unified the iPad with the iPhone and iPod touch.

iOS 4.2 is compatible with all existing iOS devices except the original iPhone and first-generation iPod touch. However, some features (such as multitasking) won’t work on older devices, including the iPhone 3G and the second-generation iPod touch.

The iOS is available via iTunes 10.1.
