BED opens new restaurant in Breda

On the 20th of September, BED opened the doors to its newest location on the Vismarktstraat in Breda. Succesful in Rotterdam (Coolsingel 18) for over a decade, the concept was introduced as a place where guests can enjoy a nice meal, indulge in a lazy post-work tipple or celebrate the weekend with cocktails, dancing and good tunes. In case you’re wondering, the name BED stands for Bar, Eating and Drinking. And indeed, BED is so much more than an average restaurant or run-of-the mill café.

The first thing to catch the attention is its well-chosen location — smack at the beginning of one of the city’s liveliest streets. From the outside, the monumental white building exudes both flair and historic charm. Inside, the decor is sleek and contemporary, yet warm and inviting thanks to the use of rustic materials such as brick and wood. A stunning eye-catcher is the wall of wood carved motifs that leads from the entrance into the main room and faces the centre bar. Also worth mentioning is the huge terrace (perfect for people-watching) and the elegant cocktail bar neatly nestled into the building’s rounded tower.

The restaurant offers a lunch menu (mainly salads and sandwiches), a dinner menu and an excellent wine list which includes a few top-notch bubbles. On the dinner menu we find classic choices: carpaccio, spareribs, pastas and steak. You can choose a two-course menu at €19,90 or opt for three courses at €24,90.

The steak tartare with its medley of traditional mix-ins is a good start, especially when washed down with a glass of their house red, which happens to be a smooth Merlot from the Languedoc. Another excellent choice is the zesty mustard soup, served in a small, hollowed-out bread loaf and topped with slivers of salmon. For the main, the beautifully cooked beef tenderloin with stir-fried mushrooms and thick-cut chips is a sure winner. As is the grilled fillet of sea bream served on a bed of mascarpone-laced, sundried tomato-speckled tagliatelle.

A sweet and light ending is the mini-shot mix consisting of fruit jazzed up with a touch of liqueur and crowned with parfait. The food is great, but does it match the service? Fortunately, the answer is ‘yes’. The staff is attentive, quick and takes the time to explain each of our choices as they are brought to the table.

BED is definitely a place to keep coming back to. Whether that be for a thoroughly pleasing meal, a relaxed drink with friends or a night out on the town. Secretly, we’re hoping there will be more BEDs popping up throughout the country in the future.
