Breda
Breda is a trendy city in the Netherlands within a medieval setting. Lots of buildings stem from the time when the nobles and royals of the Nassau family started to reside here. The Beguine court with its herb garden is a oasis of peace within the vibrant city centre. Also in the heart of Breda you will find the Breda Castle which now accommodates the Royal Military Academy.
Breda is a sparkling and historical city in West Brabant. It’s a cosy place where you can find terraces on every street corner. The combination of its rich history and numerous present-day activities makes Breda an inspiring city! During the course of years Breda has grown into a city with around 160.000 inhabitants.
The mix of the many cosy pubs and bistro’s and the excellent shopping opportunities make the city of Breda a very hospitable and friendly destination for you city break. Breda has been voted the “Best City Centre of Holland” until 2011.
Enjoying a drink with the best view of Breda; on a terrace at the Grote Markt. Next to the main church (Grote Kerk), lots of bars and restaurants have their terraces outside when the weather is nice. Because this market place is close to the shopping areas, there is never a dull moment on these terraces.
One of the market places in Breda turns into a great terrace when the sun starts showing and the weather starts warming up. Even when the weather is still a little chilly, or just cooling down late at night, some terraces are heated so business can go on. The Havermarkt is home to several bars and restaurants, and is used for festivals as well. The Havermarkt is very popular with the local students, and when the school year starts a big student introduction festival takes places in the city center.
Apart from the weekly markets Breda has about 500 shops in the city centre. Not only is the amount of shops still increasing, the quality of the shops keeps improving too. There is also a modern and dynamic shopping mall in the centre of Breda, De Barones. The Barones houses more than 55 shops and has recently opened a new shopping area, ‘t Sas.
If you like graphic design, Breda is the place to be with the only museum in the world that is entirely focussed on graphic design. Throughout the year it offers surprising exhibitions not only for adults but also for the younger ones.
