Dog Poop DNA to Track Down Owners Not Cleaning Up After Pets

A Dutch city is hoping to combat dog poo, along with pet owners who leave it behind with the help of DNA.

The Dutch city of Wijchen are using DNA testing on dog doo to find out who’s not cleaning up after their pets.

A new, remarkable device checks the DNA that dogs leave behind when they go. The genetic code is present in all dog poop, according to the municipality.

“People in different places experimented with devices that can derive DNA from poop,” said Councillor Rob English (VVD) Wijchen.

Residents must submit samples from their dogs so DNA profiles can be put on file.

Not everyone is enthusiastic about the idea. Experts highlight the high cost of the process.
