Dutch aid for victims of Typhoon Haiyan

Via the Red Cross and the United Nations, the Netherlands is donating €2 million to assist the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Development cooperation minister Lilianne Ploumen is releasing the money on top of the €50,000 that was given yesterday via the Dutch Red Cross to provide immediate assistance.

The teams that have arrived from the EU, the UN, and the International Red Cross will probably take several days to assess the scale of the damage and the types of aid most required. ‘Clearly, a lot of help is needed,’ says Ms Ploumen, ‘The victims must receive all the assistance they need as soon as possible.’

Typhoon Haiyan has already cost many lives and caused great destruction in the Philippines. Hundreds of thousands of people have fled the areas hit and are now totally dependent on aid.
