Dutch Design Cheese is fashionable in Germany

Hand-made Dutch cheese in a designer jacket is getting design acclaim in Germany.

‘Dutch Design Cheese’, made by Marinde van Leeuwen, is round Gouda cheese that has an ornate, imprinted wax wrapping. Van Leeuwen’s innovative cheese is nominated for the German Design Award 2012. In 2010 she won a prestigious Red Dot design Award for her products. ‘Dutch Design Cheese’ is currently on display at the exhibition ‘Dutch Design – House of Orange’ in the Germany Oranienbaum palace near Berlin. Dutch industrial and fashion designers are showing how they combine Dutch design with historical objects from the Dutch royal family. The exhibition features work by prominent Dutch designers like Viktor & Rolf, HellaJongerius, Marcel Wanders, Iris van Herpen and Piet Hein Eek. On request, Van Leeuwen made a special Dutch Design Cheese for this exhibition inspired by the architecture of the Oranienbaum palace.

The exhibition, which runs until 30 September, was opened by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and the federal president of Germany  Joachim Gauck.
