Dutch election date set for 12 September

The Dutch government has acceded to the wish of the House of Representatives that the parliamentary election should be held on 12 September 2012.

The Cabinet took this decision on the proposal put forward by Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations Liesbeth Spies.

The decision to hold the election in September allows new political parties to register, which they must do by 17 June.

Voters living outside the Netherlands can register to vote at any time up to and including 1 August. Anyone who voted from abroad in the May 2010 election will automatically be sent a registration form.

The House of Representatives will be dissolved on 20 September 2012, the day on which the newly elected House will meet for the first time.
