Dutch government taking measures in response to DigiNotar problem

The Dutch government is working with the business community to analyse the potential consequences of the DigiNotar problem.

They will look at each sector in turn and the results will be made known as soon as they are available. As far as taxation is concerned, the Ministry of Finance, the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers (VNO-NCW), the umbrella organisation representing Dutch SMEs (MKB-Nederland) and individual companies have reached the following conclusions.

In response to the situation concerning DigiNotar security certificates, intensive consultations have taken place involving the Tax and Customs Administration, the Ministry of Finance, VNO-NCW, MKB-Nederland, the trade association ICT~Office and various software suppliers and tax advisers. It has been concluded that the systems used by entrepreneurs to file their tax returns, either directly or via an intermediary, can continue to operate. There are sufficient additional safeguards built into the system to guarantee that returns can be filed securely. All the parties have agreed that the situation will be monitored closely in the coming period.

If there are any new developments, government will take appropriate action after consulting with the parties concerned. The Tax Administration will adopt a more lenient approach if entrepreneurs are unable to file returns on time.
