Dutch house prices nearly 8 percent lower than last year

Prices of existing owner-occupied dwellings sold in September 2012 were on average 7.9 percent lower than in September 2011. That is about the same price decrease as in July and August, when house prices fell by 8.0 percent relative to twelve months previously. The price index of existing residential property – a joint publication by Statistics Netherlands and the Land Registry Office –reflects price changes of existing owner-occupied dwellings in the Netherlands sold to private individuals.

Prices of existing owner-occupied dwellings sold in September 2012 were at approximately the same level as in early 2004. Residential property prices were 16 percent lower than in August 2008, when house prices reached a record high.

There were 81 thousand registered home sales over the first nine months of 2012 in total, i.e. down 8 percent on the same period last year.
