Dutch kids of divorced parents want to start living together when they are young

Children of couples who married young often start living together when they are young. Children of divorced couples also start living together at a younger age according to figures released by Statistics Netherlands.

Children of couples who married at a relatively young age, often start living together at a young age. If the parents were relatively old when they married, the age at which the children start living together for the first time is also distinctly higher. The patterns are the same for both genders, but on average, men start living together for the first two years later than women.

On average, children start living together six months later than their parents married in the past.

Children of divorced couples are often younger when they start living together than children of non-divorced couples. On average, daughters of divorced parents start living together at the age of 22.3; sons are on average two years older. Despite the fact that they start living together at a younger age, children of divorced parents less often marry and if they marry, they are on average older.

Higher educated women are on average slightly older when they start living together for the first time. The average age for lower educated women was 22.2 years; the average age for women educated at secondary and higher level is 23.0 and 23.5 years respectively. The relation between education level and age at which they start living together is less obvious in men.
