Dutch music growing in popularity worldwide

For the fifth consecutive year, the export of Dutch music has increased in 2009. Compared with Dutch music export in 2008, the music exports increased by 29 percent.

Sales of music from the Netherlands sold abroad brought copyright organization Buma / Stemra in 2009 almost 65 million Euros. Buma Culture announced Saturday during the music festival Eurosonic Noorderslag in Groningen.

Buma Culture sees that Dutch musicians earn more abroad from performances than CD sales and royalties for a number of years. That proved the case again in 2009.

Most foreign revenue for Buma / Stemra come from Germany, followed by Belgium, Britain and France.

Performances abroad provided the copyright organization on over 41 million, about 14.5 million of revenue comes from copyright and neighboring rights and over 9 million is attributable to recordings of Dutch artists abroad.

Over 40 percent of that revenue comes from dance music. The popular Dutch DJs Armin van Buuren, Tiesto, Ferry Corsten, Sander van Doorn, Laidback Luke, Fedde le Grand.

One of the internationally best-selling Dutch musicians in 2009 was Andre Rieu. The main musical export earned a gross income of nearly $ 96,000,000.

In total, according to Buma Culture more than 360 Dutch acts have been active abroad in 2009.

The song Venus was in 2009 (as in 2008) the most popular Dutch song abroad. The hit by Shocking Blue from 1970 is still popular in countries including Japan, America, Romania, Canada and Russia.
