Two Dutch men detained on tulip smuggling from Turkey

Two Dutch citizens have been apprehended at the Turkish border crossing with Bulgaria while allegedly attempting to smuggle out 57 rare tulip bulbs that are endemic to Erzurum’s Karayazı district.

Turkish officials seized 57 “upside-down” tulip bulbs and 160 different endemic species of 5,236 plant seeds from the vehicle in a hidden compartment.

The tulip bulbs are very valuable as they are used in cancer and Alzheimer research, added Kaya.

“A total of 19 endemic plant species are under protection, and the upside-down tulip bulb is among them,” said the expert.

The event was the largest alleged attempt to ever smuggle plants out of Turkey in the country’s history, Anatolia news agency reported.
