Many Europeans pay too much for electricity

Many Europeans can make big savings on their electricity bill. If they all switch to the cheapest electricity supplier in their region, they can save 13 billion Euros per year.

For an average customer will save about 100 Euros, according to a study which the European Commission announced the results Monday. A cheaper rate is possible for 60% of the European consumers.

Since the liberalization of the market only one third of EU citizens compared offers from energy companies. Almost half do not even know how high their electricity consumption is.

The European Commission wants to help consumers by making it easier for price comparisons and complaints procedures. The committee calls upon national governments to take action. The 27 countries are meeting in early December on the proposals.
