Euro dreams giving Dutch sleepless nights

Dutch people are very concerned about their financial future because of the euro crisis. More than seven out of ten people are deeply concerned and one fourth have sleepless nights because of financial problems. About 22 percent of the Dutch population would like to bring back the Dutch guilder.

When the euro became official tender 12 years ago, it was hailed as an economic and social savior, “the beginning of a strong European Union,” according to the EU’s top official at the time.

But now, in the middle of several economic crises, its effectiveness is coming into question.

As long as the uncertainty surrounding the euro continues, more than half of the Dutch population have no other choice then to cut back on their spending. Especially on groceries, clothing, restaurants and even vacations. They rather not cut back on healthy food and the children.
