Final exam mandatory for all Dutch primary schools

All 8th grade primary school students must take a national exam as from the school year 2012-2013.

This exam must be taken between Apr. 15 and May 15, where the current CITO test is held in early February. This writes Minister Marja van Bijsterveld (Education) in a letter to the House of Representatives.

The central exam, with the obligatory elements Mathematics and Language, replaces the current Cito test.

The new later date for the exam between April 15 and May 15 contributes to a smooth transition to secondary education.

The minister thus meets the wishes of the branch associations in primary and secondary education.

They did a test last school year at dozens of primary schools where the Cito test was taken seven weeks later than normally the case.
