Netherlands struggling with flu epidemic

The Netherlands is struggling with a flu epidemic. In the first week of the new year, the number of flu cases increased sharply.

87 per one hundred thousand Dutch people are now infected with influenza-like illnesses.

According to a research by the Dutch Institute for Health Services Research Nivel based on reports from Dutch doctors.

Last week only 36 people per hundred thousand got the flu. When there are more than 51 flu cases per hundred thousand inhabitants in two weeks, then there is an flu epidemic.

In two thirds of the flu cases its the Mexican flu (H1N1). The rest is a normal seasonal flu.
Until last week, 52 people with the flu were hospitalized. Three of them are deceased.
