Game addiction not caused by video games

Game Addiction is due to underlying psychosocial problems in a group who play computer games.

The games themselves are not the cause of the addiction, according to researcher Jeroen Lemmens of the University of Amsterdam.

Lemmens worked on a study involving 851 young people who were followed for 6 months.

The scientist said ‘‘the most important conclusion that we have noticed is that games are not necessarily addictive. The young people who are socially less skilled, less confident and lonely become addicted.”

2% of gamers are addicted. That equates to 20,000 addicts in the Netherlands.

However the game expert notes that pathological gaming causes aggression. But it does not matter, whether violent or non-violent games are played.
