A new Dutch study published today found that more than twelve thousand Dutch kids ages 13 to 16 are addicted to online video games in the Netherlands.
These kids play games nearly eight hours a day, according to the study by the Erasmus Medical Center, report the NOS.
Addicted gamers suffer more from depression than other young gamers and are nearly always boys, according to the researchers.
Playing online video games more than 40 hours a week, lack of social competence, less-than-average empathy and greater impulsivity all contributed to the addiction, the researchers found. Also, social anxiety, loneliness and self-esteem were more common.
Game addiction could well be addressed with therapies that have been developed for other addictions.
