Honey as alternative to antibiotics

Medicinal honey kills bacteria that are involved in wound infections, according to tests of an Amsterdam-Wageningen research group.

Honey might work less well than conventional antibiotics, but appears to be effective against antibiotic resistant bacteria like MRSA and ESBL E. coli, writes newspaper the “Gelderlander”.

“More and more bacteria become increasingly resistant to antibiotics”, said the Amsterdam microbiologist Paul Kwakman in the newspaper. This growing resistance is a major concern.

Honey could be an alternative to antibiotics in the future for treatment of wounds.

For at least 2700 years, honey has been used by humans to treat a variety of ailments through topical application, but only recently have the antiseptic and antibacterial properties of honey been chemically explained.
