Maastricht University is the best performing young university in Europe

Maastricht University is the best performing young university in Europe. In the third edition of the QS ‘Top 50 Under 50’ ranking, Maastricht University climbed from 7th place to 6th. This special ranking for young universities was published for the first time in 2012 to give an indication which universities may in the future become top universities worldwide. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is leading this year’s ‘Top 50 Under 50’, a special ranking derived from the QS World University Rankings, wherein UM ranks 121st.

The QS World University Ranking evaluates universities on their percentage of international students, citations, academic reputation, reputation with employers, staff/student ratios and the percentage international staff. Ben Sowter, Head of Division of the QS Intelligence Unit:

“Maastricht University is the top performing European university in this ranking. One of the most international continental European institutions, Maastricht has established itself as an attractive university and a prestigious center of academic excellence for both domestic and international students and faculty”.

Also this week, the Times Higher Education published a list of the top 25 most international universities worldwide, in which Maastricht University obtained the 15th place. This list is based on the ‘international outlook’ indicator from the THE World University Rankings, which examines a university’s international student numbers, its percentage of international staff and the proportion of its research papers published with a co-author from at least one other country.

On 30 April the Times Higher Education ‘100 Under 50 Ranking’ will be published. The THE ranking was first published in 2012 with Maastricht University in 6th place in 2013.
