Mobiles calls expensive in the Netherlands

The Netherlands is one of the most expensive countries in the EU to make a mobile phone call. According to a report by European Commissioner Neelie Kroes (Digital Agenda).

The Netherlands is the third most expensive for mobile phone calls, after Malta and Luxembourg. One-minute phone call in the Netherlands costs 20 cents. In Malta it’s 24 cents and 21 cents in Luxembourg.

The cheapest EU country is Latvia, where it costs 4 cents per minute. The average rate in the EU is 13 cents.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) came last year with a report stating that the Netherlands is the cheapest country for callers with an average use.

According regulator Opta it’s because providers in the Netherlands, offer a free device with subscriptions, and that is reflected in the rates. The OECD takes this into account, but not the report of the European Union.

Kroes asked the EU member states on Tuesday to apply more flexible EU’s telecom rules, to increase competition in the market. Consumers will benefit from this through lower prices.
