More than half of Dutch consumers using a smartphone

More than half (58%) of Dutch consumers were using a smartphone in the second quarter of 2012, a steep increase compared to a year ago, when 42 percent of consumers used smartphones. Comparable to the increase in smartphone users, is the increase of the operating system Android, which is partly due to the success of Samsung’s.

Smartphone users were most often customers of Vodafone and T-Mobile, followed at a distance by KPN and Hi. However, Hi, followed by T-Mobile and Vodafone, had the highest penetration of smartphone users in its customer base, according to Telecompaper’s report ‘Dutch Smartphone User 2012-Q2’. The report is based on an online survey of 19,300 Dutch consumers during Q2 2012 and compares the data with the previous four quarters.
The research shows the smartphone market continues to evolve. The smartphone penetration was highest among consumers under 30, and smartphone users are slightly higher educated than normal phone users.

Samsung was the most used brand for smartphones in both the postpaid and prepaid markets. Apple and HTC had larger shares in the postpaid smartphone market than in prepaid, while Samsung and Blackberry had larger shares in the prepaid smartphone market than in postpaid.

The report ‘Dutch Smartphone User 2012-Q2’ gives insight into the differences between the smartphone user and the normal phone user as well as information on the total mobile market (15-65 year-olds). The results of this quarter are compared to the previous four quarters. The report gives detailed information on the consumer demographics, handset brands and operating systems, service providers, types of subscriptions, where the mobile connection is bought and usage of apps and SMS.

This report discusses topics similar to two other reports from Telecompaper on the Dutch Mobile Consumer. These reports give information on the total mobile phone market. The first report focuses on the differences among service providers and the second on the differences among handset brands used. These reports are available for Q1 2012 and will be available later this year for Q3 2012.
