Netherlands 4th happiest nation in the world

The Netherlands is home to some of the world’s happiest people, according to a United Nations’ report.

The second annual World Happiness Report, published by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, rated the Netherlands as the fourth happiest nation in the world, same as last year.

The top five happiest countries are Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Sweden. The U.S. is 17th, and the U.K. 22nd, while the least happy country is Togo, at 156. Data was collected between 2010 and 2012.

In general, happy people live longer, are more productive, earn more money and are better citizens, the report states. Also, the research recommend utilizing relatively low-cost medications to help treat depression and other mental health issues.

The UN first encouraged member countries to measure and use the happiness of their people to guide public policies in July 2011.
