The Netherlands has increased its lead as biggest bicycle producer in Europe, raising its share of production from 20 to 30 percent in four years, Dutch statistics agency CBS says.
The overall value of bicycles produced in the European Union amounted to 1.9 billion in 2008. More than 30 percent were produced in the Netherlands, making it Europe’s largest bicycle manufacturer.
In 2008, the Netherlands manufactured 577 million worth of bicycles, an increase by more than 20 percent relative to the previous year. The Netherlands further consolidated its leading position as Europe’s largest bike manufacturer. Since 2004, the value of Dutch bicycle production in Europe has steadily grown from more than one fifth in 2004 to over 30 percent in 2008.
In 2008, the Netherlands counted about 18 million bicycles for 16.5 million citizens, according to figures provided by manufacturer organisations RAI and Bovag.
The Dutch travelled 14.2 billion kilometres by bike in 2007, compared to 21.5bn with public transport and 97.5bn by car.
