Netherlands worried by continuing violence in Nigeria

Dutch Foreign minister Uri Rosenthal is shocked at the new series of attacks against Christians in northeast Nigeria. ‘In the past year, terrorism has cost the lives of more than 500 Nigerians’, says Mr Rosenthal. ‘Violence against religious minorities is unacceptable.’

The minister has called on Nigeria’s president, Jonathan Goodluck, to act effectively against the violence. He also plans to send the Dutch human rights ambassador to Nigeria in the near future. In addition, with its European partners, the Netherlands will urge that the issue be addressed in the United Nations.

In the next few days, the EU is to examine how it can help Nigeria protect religious freedom.
