Opportunities for Dutch businesses in Nigeria

After leading a business delegation to Nigeria, Director-General Simon Smits of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation is positive about opportunities for Dutch enterprise in Nigeria.

These opportunities include clearing wrecks from the harbour in Lagos, town planning with special attention for water issues and affordable housing, and water transport, including construction of terminals.

Mr Smits met with Lagos State Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, whose considerable efforts have resulted in rapid economic development and improved security in the state. Governor Fashola expressed an interest in visiting the Netherlands to get acquainted with Dutch businesses.
The Director-General also met with Nigerian business magnate Alhaji Aliko Dangote and visited various Dutch businesses located in Nigeria. These enterprises are very pleased with Nigeria’s business climate, and although they indicate that security has improved, it does remain a concern. Nigeria still has some challenges it must address, particularly in the area of infrastructure, including the supply of energy. Issues such as corruption and unclear regulations also play a role. Dutch businesses do however agree that the Nigerian government has made considerable progress in these areas.

Mr Smits also met with representatives of civil society organisations in the area of Port Harcourt, the capital of River State where most onshore oil operations are located. He discussed the role of the Nigerian government and the oil companies in cleaning up the pollution caused by oil extraction.
