His Royal Highness the Prince of Orange Willem-Alexander will participate in the theme session “Water and Disasters” together with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon of the United Nations in New York on March 6 and 7.
The Prince is present in his role as chairman of the Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, and will give a speech.
In the past decade, more water-related disasters occurred, and the social, economic and political consequences of these disasters are increasing. Examples are the effects of Hurricane Sandy in the United States, the flooding in Bangkok, Thailand, and the tsunami in Japan.
As a result of these disasters, the UN organized a seminar on this issue. The meeting is an initiative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation, and the High Level Expert Panel on Water and Disasters.
The purpose of the meeting is to create awareness, share experiences, and discuss the proper way to a global approach to water-related disasters.
Dutch Minister of Infrastructure and Environment Melanie Schultz van Haegen is also present because of the solid Dutch expertise and reputation in the field of water safety.
