Rotterdam One Of The Most Polluted Cities In The World

Rotterdam is known as a city of great architecture, featuring many examples of innovative construction creating an impressive skyline, but a new study finds that Rotterdam is one of the most polluting cities in the world.

The International Institute for Environment and Development looked at more than 100 cities in 33 countries.

It found that cities in Nepal, India and Bangladesh emit less than half a ton of carbon dioxide equivalent per person per year while the highest emitters –Rotterdam, Denver, Sydney, Washington, Minneapolis and Calgary, respectively — emit more than 17 tons per capita, according to the study by the International Institute for Environment and Development, a London-based independent and non-profit group.

Rotterdam sends per capita 29.8 tons of CO2 into the air. That’s more than Shanghai (11.2 tonnes) or Athens (10.4 tonnes).

One conclusion: cities can have a high-consumption lifestyle but low per capita production emissions.
This means all New York is a relatively clean city, because the people use the subway to go to work and live close together and therefore have lower emissions per person.

Rotterdam is one of the most polluted cities in the world, because Rotterdam is a relatively large city with high-CO2-producing industries.

The cleanest city in the world is, Thimpu, the capital of Bhutan, with only 0.3 tonnes of CO2 per capita.
