Rotterdam rated must-visit destination for 2014

Rotterdam has been rated one of the best cities in the world to visit in 2014, thanks to the new sights coming soon.

The news that Rotterdam has been ranked as one of the top holiday destinations for the year by The New York Times and Rough Guide was welcomed by the municipality of Rotterdam.

“This is great news for our city’s tourism sector and excellent publicity for our destination,” they said in a statement.

The New York Times article “52 Places to go in 2014” ranked Rotterdam in 10th place and noted the first-class architecture in the Netherlands’ second city.

Rotterdam has been ranked eight in the annual Rough Guide Travel Hotlist for 2014. It features alongside Rio de Janeiro, Sarajevo, Portland and Liverpool as one of the guide’s top picks for this year.

Post-World War II reconstruction has changed the face of one of Europe’s largest ports, where striking, cubed architecture gives shape to the most modern skyline in the Netherlands, according to The New York Times.

It will be a banner year for ribbon cuttings to celebrate both new and reconfigured space: An overhaul of Rotterdam Centraal train station (scheduled for completion in March) has already unveiled a new shop-lined pedestrian passageway and the city’s first Starbucks.

The Netherlands’ biggest building, a new “vertical city” called De Rotterdam, will soon be alive with cafés and restaurants, heralding a new dawn for the high-rise area locals have dubbed Manhattan on the Maas.

The renovated Kunsthal museum reopens in February. François Geurds, chef of the two-Michelin-starred restaurant FG, opens another restaurant this month. Come October, the massive arch of the Markthal, whose interior displays 3-D food photographs, becomes the country’s first indoor food hall. The Rem Koolhaas-designed nhow hotel will open its doors on January 10, 2014.

Rotterdam is the place to be! The Dutch city is pictured with its beautiful skyline among other top cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Marseille, Liverpool, Los Angeles, Perth and Cape Town.
