Sailing Girl Laura Dekker Won’t Make Guinness Record

Sailing Girl Laura Dekker (16) will arrive in St. Maarten this weekend where she began her journey around the world one year ago.

Although she will indeed be the youngest sailor who ever sailed around the world solo, she won’t have a spot in the Guinness World Records after all.

This has nothing to do with her personal achievement, but Guinness World Records told it won’t award Dekker as the world’s youngest sailor because they no longer want to recognize the category ‘youngest’. “We are implementing a policy where we no longer support or encourage inappropriate record attempts by minors” reads the explanation.

Also the World Sailing Speed Record Council, the official body for sailing records, has no age group. “For us it is the speed,” according to the organization.

The last person who was named youngest solo sailor around the world by Guinness World Records, was the Englishman Michael Perham. He established his record between November 15, 2008 and August 27, 2009. Perham was 16 years when he left and 17 years when he got back.
