Schiphol named International Airport of the year

Schiphol has been named “The International Airport of the year”.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has secured the prestigious ‘International Airport of the Year 2012’ award at the CAPA’s Aviation awards for Excellence gala dinner, held today in Hong Kong.

CAPA (Centre for Aviation) is a highly recognized, global provider of independent market intelligence, analysis and data services for the aviation industry.

CAPA’s international panel of judges recognized that Amsterdam Airport Schiphol displayed significant leadership across a wide range of key airline and passenger related issues. Through its efforts, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has taken up an exemplary role within the global aviation industry.

The CAPA Aviation Awards for Excellence have been organized annually for the past 10 years.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol was Europe’s fourth largest airport in passenger numbers and third in cargo volumes in 2011, welcoming 49.8 million passengers and processing 1.5 million tonnes of cargo. A total of 103 airlines offer direct flights from Schiphol to 313 destinations all over the globe. This makes Amsterdam Airport Schiphol one of the four most important Main Ports (or hubs) in Europe. It is also one of the two European home bases of Air France-KLM and the SkyTeam alliance. In addition, Schiphol is an important contributor to the regional economy, providing employment for around 62,000 people at the airport.
