Teenage sailor Laura Dekker completes round-the-world trip

Dutch teenager Laura Dekker who set out to become the youngest solo around-the-world sailor has completed her journey on Saturday night at 8 hours (Dutch time).

Laura Dekker, 16, was greeted by a cheering crowd as she sailed into the St Maarten harbour in the Caribbean after a year at sea. According to her spokesperson Laura is doing well. “She looks very healthy and cheerful”.

She left on 20 January 2011 aboard her 11.5m (38ft) boat Guppy and covered more than 27,000 nautical miles on a trip with stops in the Canary Islands, Panama, the Galapagos Islands, Tonga, Fiji, Bora Bora, Australia, South Africa and now, St. Maarten.

The Guinness Book of Records decided to stop recognising records for “youngest” sailors after the controversy surrounding her bid.
