Winter is the perfect time for Dutch pea soup, vegetables and potatoes

With winter setting in, there is a lot of tasty and tempting Dutch food around.

Dutch stamp pots, pea soups, smoked sausages and winter vegetables such as Brussels sprouts and farmers cabbage are flying from the shelves in supermarkets.

According to the Central Bureau of Food (CBL) during this period these kinds of foods products are sold six times as much then in spring and summer.

The extreme cold temperature is the main cause. “As the temperature drops, the turnover of typical winter food products increases.”

Dutch pea soup is sold three times as fast as normal, according to is a spokesperson. Also stew vegetables and potatoes do well. Interestingly, is the demand for fruit. “People eat more mandarins, oranges and kiwis to strengthen the body’s immune system.”
